Shale gas in Cambay basin

US-based minnow Joshi Technologies (JTI) is in talks with the DGH, the oil ministry, GSPC and ONGC about sharing resources to tap onshore shale gas reserves in Gujarat’s Cambay basin. Producing shale gas can be expensive, JTI tells us, requiring advanced technology.

“Vertical wells don’t yield shale gas,”says JTI, “You need horizontal wells with six to 15 ‘sophisticated fracturings’.” These horizontal wells can cost three times as much asvertical ones. JTI last met oil ministry officials in April to discuss a concerted development strategy for exploiting Cambay basin shale gas.

Last year JTI “accidentally” discovered shale gas 1350-metres below surface in a well at its Dholka field. “No major discovery has been made for a long time in the Cambay
basin,” we are told.

“Shale gas is a new prospect which will boost exploration.” Growing shale gas production in the US has revolutionised the market there, and had a direct impact on global LNG prices.
